Our Company History
The Thomas Financial Group Journey
Established in 1983 as Thomas USAF Group, LLC, Thomas Financial Group quickly emerged as a trailblazer in government-guaranteed lending under the leadership of Mike Thomas. From its inception, the company has been committed to delivering innovative, mission-driven financing through SBA and USDA programs—empowering rural and small businesses to access the capital they need to thrive.
Over the decades, Thomas Financial Group has earned a national reputation for its expertise in loan origination, regulatory compliance, and program innovation. The firm has played a critical role in shaping and executing loan structures aligned with evolving federal policies, particularly in key sectors such as agriculture, energy, and rural infrastructure.
In January 2025, Thomas Financial Group was acquired by Community Bankshares Inc. (CBI)—a transformative milestone that further strengthened its capacity to serve clients nationwide. CBI, which also includes Phoenix Lender Services and Community Bank & Trust (CB&T), provides a fully integrated platform of specialized lending and financial services. With the backing of the broader CBI network, Thomas Financial Group now offers expanded capabilities, enhanced resources, and an even broader geographic reach.
Today, Thomas Financial Group is one of the nation’s largest originators of USDA and SBA loans, with over $5 billion in financing delivered to businesses across all 50 states and U.S. territories. Its history reflects a steadfast commitment to economic development, community growth, and the long-term success of America’s small business sector.
